Anthem

Introduction

The new anthem was inspired through workshops with young people as part of the Written in Stone project. As part of its legacy, this is now available for groups to use and include in future commemorative events. There are 3 different versions available and the manuscript can be downloaded. A CD is also available free of charge on request by email to pomytheatre@gmail.com

WRITTEN IN STONE  part 1

WRITTEN IN STONE

ARE THE NAMES ALONE

BUT WHO REMEMBERS THE PEOPLE?

A FORGOTTEN FORCE

FROM FORGOTTEN WARS

FADED INTO THE PAST

MONUMENTS

TESTAMENTS

POPPIES WORN ONCE A YEAR

POLICIES

HOSTILITIES

TERROR HATE AND FEAR

SINCE THE SOMME

AND THE NEUTRON BOMB

TROOPS OF LOST REFUGEES

WILL OLD WOUNDS MEND?

WILLIT EVER END?

WILL WE EVER HAVE PEACE?

WRITTEN IN STONE part 2

LEST WE FORGET WHAT NO ONE STILL ALIVE CAN REMEMBER

WE SILENTLY STAND SIDE BY SIDE ON THIS DAY IN NOVEMBER

FOR HONOUR AND DUTY THEY ANSWERED THE CALL

THE HORROR AND CRUELTY AWAITING THEM ALL

THE ONCE BLAZING HOME-FIRES REDUCED NOW TO ASHES AND EMBERS

GONE TOO ARE THE MOTHERS THAT ONCE WASHED THESE STONES WITH THEIR TEARS

EVEN THEIR CHILDREN ARE FEWER THE GREATER THE YEARS

THOUGH THEY WERE LOST TO THE MOST NOBLE CAUSE

THE GREAT WAR, THE WAR TO END ALL OTHER WARS

THE RALLYING CLARION STILL FINDS THE BRAVE SOLDIERS’ EARS

SHATTERED IN BATTLE

BROKEN BY BRAVERY

IN THE CLAMOUR OF VALOUR REMEMBER THE VICTIMS OF VICTORY

PRAY THAT THE HOWITZER IS SILENT AGAIN

NO MORE THE HORROR OF WAR, THE REAPING OF MEN

THE NAMES EMBOSSED ONTO PLAQUES AND WRITTEN IN STONE

ONCE LOST NOW UNITED TOGETHER HAVE SOMEHOW COME HOME

AND WHEN WAR IS FINALLY OVER AND DONE

AND WE BURY OUR FATHERS AND SONS

AND WE ALL COUNT THE COST AND THEY TELL US WE’VE WON

WE’VE ALL LOST SOMEONE

LET THESE MONUMENTS BE CONSIGNED TO HISTORY
